“Difficult Objects” (2021-ongoing) explores the intersection of the tangible and the psychological through a series of photographic works. Each piece navigates the space between the familiar and the unknown, prompting reflection of our personal relationships to the ubiquitous public and private structures. “Difficult Objects” sets out to draft how urban territories and domestic spheres collide and merge, leaving oddly shaped gaps where imagination attempts to interpret the connections.The theme of ambiguity and scale is constant, challenging the viewer to rethink relational bonds between objects and experiences. The colours flowing through the work evoke emotional spaces, ripe for filling with hopes and dreams, yet these can just as easily become a stage for fears and anxieties. The work stems from the difficulty in articulating these observations in words so this project stages a perceptual narrative where the images are tasked with being the guide.

Works like “Background” (2019) and “Glasgow/Untitled” (2018) ground the work in materiality and major events while staged scenes in the triptych “Difficult Objects”, “RGB” (2020) and “Awkward Object” (2021) map out the experiential and personal.


"Difficult Objects" blends the real with the felt, urging us to consider our place within the spaces we share.

Ruudu Ulase näitus "Keerulised asjad" keskendub pingeväljadele, mis avanevad argiste olukordade sügavamal vaatlusel. Näituse käivitavaks jõuks on hõõrdumine ruumilise paratamatuse ja meie emotsionaalsete vajaduste vahel.

Siin kohtuvad avalik ja privaatne, mis meie igapäevaelus liiga tihti kohti vahetavad. Kuigi elamisväärsele keskkonnale pööratakse järjest enam tähelepanu, on linnas sageli tunne, et kusagil ei ole mõnus olla. Institutsioonid muutuvad avatumaks, avaramaks, valgusküllasemaks: kõik on justkui kõigega seotud. Millegipärast igatseme aga hoopis isikupäraseid nurgataguseid soppe, et saada nii enda kui teiste koordinaatidest aru. Sellest räägib teos „Hoitud“. Koridor, mis on justkui valmis, aga osaliselt kasutu. Ei üles- ega allaminekul ei ulata käsipuu sulle oma abikätt. Vaata ise kuidas hakkama saad. Sellele vastukaaluks on teos „Punane punasel“, kus laager on püsti löödud teadmata kohas. Teatraalselt kardinaga piiratud voodis on veel aimata küljealuse soojust ja vedelevat kehaasendit. Puhkehetk saab seal peaaegu sakraalse mõõtme. 

Seda pideva liikumise tunnet, mis kulgeb erinevatesse suundadesse, küsitleb „Vaade paremasse nurka“. Tühi ruum, mis peeglist vastu vaatab, tekitab kummalise segadustunde. See on küsimus ja vastus korraga. Ja ka see teos räägib üksi ja koos olemisest. Mõnikord tekib samasugune kummastus siis, kui oled üksinda liftis ja sulle näib, nagu vaataks keegi sind seina seest. Mõistus ütleb küll ei, aga sellest hoolimata haistame üksteise psüühilisi jälgi ootamatutes või veidrates kohtades.Aga kuidas siis ikkagi olla? Leppimine toimub läbi kummastuse ja absurdi. Videoteoses „Pigeon Loop“ näeme tulutut võitlust paradoksiga. Just püüdsin ju selle selle tuvi kinni, panin viisakalt kõrvale, kuidas ta siis jälle oma kohale tagasi sai? Või miks? No ei anna rahu. Seesama ärev tunne tekib, kui irratsionaalne, võimatu, ebausklikuks muutev siseneb meie tavaellu, nii et kuklakarvad tõusevad turri. Ruudu Ulase kunst toob esile neid psühholoogiliselt laetud hetki, millest kiiresti üle libisetakse, aga mis meid alateadlikult mõjutama jäävad.

Hoolivuse kujutamist näeme teoses „Bulge“.Tõenäoliselt avariisse sattunud auto mootorit on remondini proovitud konserveerida koormakattega. Seda on tehtud kummaliselt kobrutaval viisil, mis näeb välja nagu uinunud kallima sängitamine või aupaklik ettevaatlikkus, millega käsitletakse perekonna reliikviaid. Kuidas see olukord tekkis, või mis selle osalistest edasi sai, jääb teadmata, aga Ulas on meieni toonud väljavõtte sellest õrnusest, millega olukorda käsitleti. Näituse teeb eriliseks just see, et selle teosed juhatavad meid märkama situatsioone, milles avaldub inimlik austus ümbritsevasse. Ruudu Ulase loominguga tutvusin esmakordselt läbi teose „Positsioonid: oranž valgel, valge oranžil“. See tekitas sügava äratundmise. Kuigi mitmed mu tegevused ja valikud räägivad sellele vastu, pean ennast eelkõige maalikunstnikuks. Just maaliregistri abil suutsin siseneda Ruudu töödesse. Näen fotograafiast lähtuvat meediumitruudust, millele kunstnik küll toetub, aga sellest olulisemaks peab ta teoste tervikut, näituseruumi, isikliku ja avaliku ruumi kokkukuuluvust. Teos „Positsioonid: oranž valgel, valge oranžil“ toob kõik need suundumused samaaegselt nähtavaks. Näeme seinalt kukkunud radiaatorit, avaneb mitmekordne värvi ja&#38;nbsp; elumärkide kihistus. Kui olukorra argisus kõrvale jätta, on tegu puhta visuaalse poeesiga. Jääb teadmata, kas kunstnik on olukorra loonud, lavastanud või leidnud.Olen ühe sõbraga aastate jooksul sadu kilomeetreid maha kõndinud. Sest on vaja uitamist, avastamist, käimata radu. Enamasti kõnnime me vaikides. Kuid ükskord rääkis sõber oma unenäost – terve linn oli tühi, ta oli üksi ja tal olid kõikide uste võtmed. Ruudu Ulase näitus ulatab oma teostega meile mõned neist võtmetest, mis viivad sinna, kus kohtuvad argipäev ja unenägu.

	Are You There? - A Digital SéanceAre You There is a digital séance, an experimental interactive lecture where the boundaries between physical and virtual being are explored through magic.Going forward it will be impossible to fully refuse the efficiency of digital living. Still, the solitary displays provide no true replacement for the physical encounters between bodies in space. But we adapted swiftly to the new circumstances and now we inhabit the futuristic bodiless space of technological wonder with ease.This séance will not conjure up any external entities but rather creates a shared experience of astonishment for each other.Premiere on July 2, 2021 at Royal College of Art, London.Developed and performed by Ruudu Ulas and Luis Carr.

	Exploring the role of time, sustainability and unconsidered human agency in our relationship to the photographic medium, Accumulated Traces centres itself around remnants of human actions captured in a moment of transition.
I have gathered cumulative evidence of our trivial daily actions, ones that usually dissapear from memory without a trace, and placed them spatially in relation to each other so as to propose new questions and permit deeper consideration of some of our habitual behaviours.&#38;nbsp;Calling for awareness of the way we move through our lives and navigate our surroundings I invite the viewer to consider the ultimate shape and weight of a mundane gesture.
